Frequently asked questions

Is lightning attracted to a metal roof?

No, lightning is not attracted to metal roofs. Contrary to a common myth, lightning is mainly attracted to tall structures, building shape, and atmospheric conditions rather than the roofing material itself. Having a metal roof does not increase the likelihood of a building being struck by lightning. To learn more about metal roofing systems and their benefits, visit Toitures Multi-Métal.

In fact, metal roofing can even be considered safer during a lightning strike. Metal is a non-combustible material and can help disperse electrical energy through the building’s structure and toward the ground. This can reduce the risk of fire compared with some traditional roofing materials. However, installing a lightning protection system may still be recommended depending on the building’s location and height.
